AerPort Support for Voice Services

Some Aeris products support voice services with their IoT devices. This article describes use cases for voice services, which products support voice services, and requirements for use.

In this article:

Terminology

Voice Service: When you "call" someone from your mobile phone or receive a "call" from someone, you are using "Voice Service."

MO-Voice: "Mobile-Originated Voice." This means that it is a mobile device originating the voice call. The mobile device also can be considered as the source of the voice call.

MT-Voice: "Mobile-Terminated Voice." This means that the mobile device is receiving the the voice call. This mobile device also can be considered as the destination of the voice call.

Circuit Switched (CS) Voice: Uses 2G/3G technology where the voice travels over connections intended primarily for voice.

Voice-over LTE (VoLTE): Uses 4G/5G technology where the voice is transferred in Internet Protocol (IP) packets over data connections.

Temporary Number (TLDN): For security reasons, it is best to keep IoT devices as not reachable (or not dialable) if possible. When we do want to reach out to the devices, we can use a Temporary Number or Temporary Local Dialable Number (TLDN).

Permanent Number (PLDN): When we want to reach out to the devices using a persistent number, we can use a Permanent Number or Permanent Local Dialable Number (PLDN).

IoT Voice Service Use Cases

Use Case Aeris Support
Calling a Call Center.

An event at the IoT device triggers a voice call with a call center.

Example: A car or truck experiences an emergency, which triggers an automated call to a special call center which can then relay the call to 9-1-1 if appropriate.

  • Fusion Global and Fusion Global HD: CS only
  • Fusion NA: CS and VoLTE
  • Dual-Mode A-LH: CS and VoLTE
  • Global SIM: CS only
Event Triggers Call from a Call Center.

The IoT device sends an SMS with event information to the call center. The call center then initiates a call back to the IoT device.

Example: The driver pushes a roadside assistance button in the vehicle which causes an SMS to be sent to the call center and triggers a call back from the call center.

  • Fusion Global and Fusion Global HD: CS only
  • Fusion NA: CS and VoLTE
  • Dual-Mode A-LH: CS and VoLTE
  • Global SIM: CS only
Call Center / Dispatcher Calls IoT Device.

There is no particular event at the IoT device. The call center initiates the call to the IoT device.

Can be supported via API integration to get Temporary Number or via Permanent Number on Dual-Mode A-LH and Fusion NA.
Off-net handset MT-Voice to IoT device.

Some handset, which could be in a different network, calls the IoT device. This use case represents a security issue. If this use case is allowed, the MT calls can be used to attack the IoT device.

Requires a Permanent Number. Only supported via Dual-Mode A-LH and Fusion NA.

Requirements for Use

The following information is provided to assist you in planning your IoT voice service. However, you are encouraged to discuss your use case with your Aeris account manager to ensure your service is set up correctly.

Note: e911 calls are not allowed on the Aeris IoT network. If e911 is part of your use case, please plan for the IoT device to contact a call center, which may then place the e911 call on behalf of the IoT device.

Fusion NA:

  • To use MO-Voice, MT-Voice, MT-SMS, and MO-SMS services, support for PLDN must be enabled for your account, and the Service Profile must have voice and SMS services enabled. Contact Aeris Support to enable these options.
  • If PLDN is not enabled for your account, there is no support for MO-Voice and MT-Voice. MT-SMS is available only via the SMPP and AerFrame interfaces. Both MT-SMS and MO-SMS messages appear to come from the shortcode 23747.
  • Your Fusion NA devices must support MMTEL-compliant VoLTE for voice.
  • Fusion NA VoLTE works only while connected to the T-Mobile network. Roaming is not supported.
  • Your Fusion NA devices must use SMS over IMS.
  • You must provision the SIM using the Service Profile provided to you by Aeris Support. This Service Profile must have Voice enabled.
  • The Fusion NA SIM must have never been previously provisioned for non-voice service.
  • T-Mobile will assign the last used MSISDN number to a subscription for the first 60 days after the subscription is canceled.

The following table outlines the Fusion NA device status and MSISDN dependencies.

    Device Status Eligibility MSISDN Number
Currently or previously provisioned with no Voice Service. Not eligible to add Voice Service.
Currently or previously provisioned with Voice Service... Eligible to add Voice Service The current MSISDN number remains in use.
...Previously provisioned with Voice Service and canceled less than 45 days ago.   T-Mobile will assign the last used MSISDN number.
...Previously provisioned with Voice Service and canceled for 45-60 days.

Call Aeris Support to provision or re-provision this device.

T-Mobile will assign the last used MSISDN number.
...Previously provisioned with Voice Service and canceled for 60+ days. Fusion NA SIMs can no longer be provisioned.

Dual-Mode A-LH:

  • To use MO-Voice, MT-Voice, MT-SMS, and MO-SMS services, the Service Profile must have these voice and SMS services enabled. Contact Aeris Support to enable these options.
  • The device must support VoLTE.

Global SIM:

  • To use MO-Voice, MT-Voice, MT-SMS, and MO-SMS services, the Service Profile must have these voice and SMS services enabled. Contact Aeris Support to enable these options.
  • Global SIM uses CS 2G/3G technology for voice.
  • Availability of CS Voice in the United States may be very limited starting in 2022.

Fusion Global and Fusion Global HD:

  • To use MO-Voice, MT-Voice, MT-SMS, and MO-SMS services, the Service Profile must have these voice and SMS services enabled. Contact Aeris Support to enable these options.
