You can create new alerts to monitor traffic and activity for individual devices or a group of devices in your account. This article outlines the process of creating a new alert and the alert preferences that you can modify.
In this article:
Basics
To create an alert:
- Navigate to the Manage Alerts screen.
- Click Create New Alert at the top right of the screen. Aerport
displays the following window where you can define a new alert.
- Modify the alert preferences as needed.
See Defining the Alert for descriptions of each field.
- Once you define the alert, click Save to create the alert.
Note: The new alert appears in the Manage Alerts widget with an Active status.
Defining the Alert
The following sections describe how you define the alert.
Alert Info
- Name: Defines the unique identifier of the alert profile. This name also identifies the alert in the Current Alerts section of the Dashboard.
- Description: Defines a short description about the alert, which can be related to the alert objective and other information.
Device Info
The Device Info section identifies the devices you want to monitor in the alert. Click the Include Devices From drop-down menu and select your desired category. The following options are then displayed based on the category selected.
Category | Description |
---|---|
Entire Account | Includes all devices in the account in the alert. No additional device information is required. |
Rate Plan | Use the Rate Plan drop-down menu to select a specific rate plan. This includes all devices in the selected rate plan in the alert. |
Report Group | Enter a valid report group into the Report Group field. This includes all devices in the indicated report group in the alert. |
Pool Name | Use the Pool Name drop-down menu to select a specific pool. This includes all devices in the selected pool in the alert. |
Specific Devices | Use the Device ID Type drop-down menu to choose a Device ID Type. Then enter the device ID(s) in the text field, one line per device. Up to 100 devices can be specified. |
Threshold & Trigger Info
The Threshold & trigger info section defines the type of monitored activity (Alert type), Threshold criteria, and Time period for the alert. See Alert Threshold and Triggers for a full list of alert types and examples.
Action Info
The Action info section describes the action that occurs when an alert is triggered.
Note: Email Alert is the default selection for Action, which cannot be unselected.
Email Alert
On an hourly basis, AerPort records which devices meet the threshold(s) defined in the alert, then begins applying the traffic policy on the individual devices. An email notification is sent to all users configured to receive email notifications within 30 minutes.
Note: Devices that trigger an alert with a traffic policy have their services blocked individually as soon as the system finds them. Summary emails to report this activity will be sent every 15 minutes until all device blocking is completed.
For devices that trigger an alert with no traffic policy, summary emails are sent every 15 minutes until all devices have been communicated to the email recipients.
Traffic Policy
If a Traffic Policy is applied, devices that trigger the alert will have their services blocked as defined in the alert action.
To apply a traffic policy, use the check boxes to select which services to block:
- Block All: Blocks the device's registration to prevent incoming and outgoing Packet data, SMS, and Voice services.
- Block Packet: Prevents Packet data from being transmitted to and from the device.
- Block SMS: Prevents SMS messages from being sent to and from the device.
- Block Voice: Prevents Voice calls from being made to and from the device.
On an hourly basis, AerPort records which devices meet the threshold(s) defined in the alert, and then begins applying the traffic policy on the individual devices. An email notification is sent to all users configured to receive email notifications within 30 minutes.
Devices that trigger an alert with a traffic policy will have their services blocked individually. Summary emails to report this activity will be sent every 15 minutes until all device blocking is completed.
Notes:
- At the beginning of a new time period, blocked devices are not automatically unblocked. To unblock traffic, you must edit the device's traffic policy from the Devices tab.
- Currently only Block all and Unblock all alert actions are available for Dual-Mode A-LH devices. Individual traffic policies such as Block data are not available.
- If a "Block all" traffic policy is applied to a Dual-mode A-LH device, it is still possible for MT-SMS to be delivered to the device.
Configuring Email Recipients
When an alert is triggered, an email notification is sent to each user in the email recipient list. A maximum of 10 recipients is allowed per account.
Devices that trigger an alert with a traffic policy have their services blocked individually as soon as the system finds them. Summary emails to report this activity will be sent every 15 minutes until all device blocking is completed.
For devices that trigger an alert with no traffic policy, summary emails are sent every 15 minutes until all devices have been communicated to the email recipients.
To configure email recipients:
- Click Configure Email Recipients to access the recipient
management tool.
- Enter the desired email addresses into the list, pressing Enter
between each address. Then click Save.
- (Optional) Click the X next to an email address to remove a
recipient.
- Click Save to save your changes.
